Touch 'n Go eWallet review: the everyday super app
Touch 'n Go eWallet is one of the most widely used e-wallets in Malaysia. It is run by TNG Digital, a joint venture between Touch 'n Go and Ant Group, and grew from the familiar Touch 'n Go card into a full digital wallet. Today it aims to be the one app you need for tolls, transport, shopping, bills and even savings and investments. We used it as our main wallet for three weeks to see if it lives up to the super app promise.

Overview

  • Operator: TNG Digital Sdn Bhd
  • Category: E-wallet, payments, financial services
  • Platforms: Android, iOS and Huawei devices
  • Regulation: Licensed e-money issuer regulated by Bank Negara Malaysia
  • Price: Free to download, most payments have no fees

Key features

  • QR payments: scan and pay at shops, restaurants, hawker stalls and night markets. It supports DuitNow QR, so it works with a huge range of merchants.
  • RFID and toll payments: link your RFID tag and highway tolls are deducted directly from your eWallet balance, with no card to reload.
  • NFC card reload: reload your physical Touch 'n Go card by tapping it on an NFC-enabled phone.
  • Bills and reloads: pay electricity, water, internet, and phone bills, and buy mobile prepaid reloads.
  • Transfers: send money to friends, and transfer to bank accounts through DuitNow.
  • GO+: move idle balance into GO+ to earn daily returns while still being able to spend it.
  • Financial services: access investment, insurance and other financial products from partners, directly in the app.
  • Transport and parking: pay for parking and buy tickets for various transport services.

The tech behind it

Touch 'n Go eWallet combines several payment technologies in one app. QR payments use the national DuitNow QR standard, which is why the same QR code at a shop can be paid with many different apps. RFID toll payment uses a small tag on your windscreen that is read by the toll gate as you drive through, and the charge is linked to your eWallet account. NFC card reload uses your phone chip to write new balance to your physical card. For security, the app uses a 6-digit PIN, biometric login, device binding (your account is tied to a registered phone), and eKYC identity verification using your MyKad and a selfie. Verified accounts get higher wallet limits and access to more features.

How to use it

  1. Download the app and register with your mobile number.
  2. Complete eKYC verification by scanning your MyKad and taking a selfie.
  3. Top up using online banking, debit card or at supported counters.
  4. Tap Scan to pay at shops, or show your payment code to the cashier.
  5. Link your RFID tag in the toll section for cashless highway travel.
  6. Explore GO+ and the financial services section once you are comfortable.

Benefits

  • Accepted almost everywhere: from big malls to small stalls, it is rare to find a place that does not accept it.
  • Smooth road trips: RFID tolls remove the need to slow down and tap a card.
  • Money management in one place: spending, bills, savings and investments are all visible in one app.
  • Cashless and contactless: no need to carry cash or worry about change.
  • Rewards: frequent cashback, vouchers and promotions from merchants.

Who is it for?

Almost everyone in Malaysia. It suits daily commuters, drivers who use highways often, students on a budget, and small merchants who want to accept cashless payments easily. It is also a gentle first step into savings and investment for people who have never used such products before.

What we liked

  • Very wide acceptance at merchants across the country.
  • RFID toll payment makes highway travel noticeably smoother.
  • Bills, reloads, transfers and payments all work reliably.
  • GO+ is an easy way to make idle balance earn something.
  • Strong security options with PIN, biometrics and device binding.

What could be better

  • The app packs in many features, so the home screen can feel crowded for new users.
  • Promotions and pop-ups sometimes get in the way of a quick payment.
  • Customer support response times can vary during busy periods.
  • Wallet limits for unverified accounts are low, so eKYC is almost a must.

Tips for new users

  • Complete eKYC early to unlock higher limits and all features.
  • Enable biometric login for faster and safer payments.
  • Set up auto reload for RFID so you never get stuck at a toll gate.
  • Check the rewards section before paying, as there are often vouchers available.

Verdict: 4/5. Touch 'n Go eWallet is the most practical all-rounder e-wallet for daily life in Malaysia. It is packed with features and accepted almost everywhere. A cleaner interface would make it even better, but it is still an essential app for most Malaysians.

Similar apps you can try

  • GrabPay: built into the Grab app, ideal if you often use Grab for rides and food delivery and want to pay and earn rewards in one place.
  • ShopeePay: the wallet inside the Shopee app, useful for online shopping and also accepted at many physical stores through QR.
  • MAE by Maybank: a digital banking and e-wallet app from Maybank, great for DuitNow transfers, QR payments and budgeting.
  • BigPay: a prepaid card and app popular with travellers for spending overseas and tracking expenses.
